Get Paid While You Learn

What Is An Apprenticeship?
- Examples Of Apprenticeships = Childcare, Computing, Construction, Catering, Engineering, Hairdressing, Business Admin. Plus Many More
- Supervised On The Job Training With An Employer Where You Will Gain Practical Experience, Skills And Knowledge
- P/T Study For A Related Qual. P/T Study May Be At A Local College Or Your Employer May Be An Accredited Learning Provider And Your Learning Could Take Place On Site. Usually NVQ Levels 1 – 5 (these are work related qualifications:
- Intermediate = 5 GCSE’s
- Advance = 2 A levels’s
- Higher = can lead to a Foundation Degree
- You Will Also Work Towards Key Skills Qualifications Such As Communication, Working In Teams, Problem Solving & Using New Technologies
- In Many Cases You Will Also Work Towards a Relevant Technical Certificate
- Usually Takes Between 1 – 3 Years To Complete, But Some Such As Engineering Can Take Up To 4 or 5 Years. Training can be 1 day per week or on blocks
- Apprenticeships can with an Employer or a Training Provider
Pay & Holidays
- You Will Be Paid A Minimum Of £3.30 per hour – this is roughly £99.00 per week for 30 hours
- You May Pay Tax On Your Wages
- You May Also Be Able To Get A Small Amount of Funding To Help With Travel
- You Will Receive At Least 20 Days Holiday Per Year (Plus Bank Holidays)

- You can now look at the St Joseph’s College website www.stjosephscollege.org.uk
- (Go to the Careers Blog and then apprenticeships) for various apprenticeship vacancies.
- This list will give you lots of contact websites, they are either employers or training providers.
- A very important website www.apprenticeships.gov.uk
- This is the Government’s Matching Service – you search for vacancies and then apply. Also you will be alerted about vacanices
- Go to www.apprenticeships.gov.uk to look at application process.
- Scroll down until you come to Find and Apply for Apprenticeships Click on this icon
- Click on:Search the find an apprenticeship service

How to Apply to www.apprenticeships.gov.uk
- If you like a job click on it
- You will find out about the job, pay, where it is, what you will be doing.
- It will also tell you the skills required and the type of person they are looking for.
- When you fill in the application you must include as many of these attribute and skills as possible
- You will then have lots of information to help you apply for the jobs. You should also look at the employers website (if there is one), you will find more information there.
- Then click ‘Sign in to Apply’
- Now click ‘Create an account’, fill in your details. Activate your account with the Activation Code which has been sent to the email address you have given
- Go back to your application form and fill in your details: Education, Qualifications, Work experience (this could be voluntary work)
- Alway print a copy of your application form and keep it safe for later use
How to Apply to www.apprenticeships.gov.uk
- Your Strengths : Try to include some of the skills the employer is looking for, an example is good communication, now you also need to give an example to prove this, one example may be “ I am the class representative and attend the school council meetings” or “I am the secretary of my football team and have to communicate with all members by email”
- Complete the rest of the form
- If you apply for another job you can review your answers and change them. You should do this every time you make an application, because each job is different and requires different skills etc.

- Go Direct To Employers In your Area (Use www.yell.com For A List Of: Engineering Companies, Plumbing etc), They May Be Advertising Specifically For Apprentices Or You Could Ask Them If They Have Any Vacancies Coming Up – Leave Your Contact Details Or A CV
- Employers Often Advertise Vacancies On Their Own Websites, So Do A Search On The Internet For Local Employers Who Offer Apprenticeships
- If You Have a Job contact You Could Ask Your Employer If They Would Consider Putting You on An Apprenticeship, If Interested Your Employer Could Get More Information On The Apprenticeships Line 08000 150 400

What Happens When I Find A Vacancy?
- You May Have To Complete An Application Form
- You May Be Invited For An Interview Directly By An Employer
- If You Find Your Vacancy Through A Learning Provider You May Have An Interview With The Learning Provider First, Followed By An Interview With An Employer That Has Been Introduced To You By the Learning Provider
- At Either Interview You May Be Asked To Take A Numeracy & Literacy Assessment Test So Your Academic Level Is Checked
- Hopefully You Are Then Offered The Apprenticeship
What Happens Once I Finish My Apprenticeship?
- The Hope Is That You Continue To Work For Your Employer, And Now Fully Trained Your Wages Will Increase
- You Could Eventually Seek Alternative Employment Now That You Have Many Skills, Much Knowledge And Relevant Qualifications In Your Chosen Field
- Some Advanced Apprentices Use Their Apprenticeship As a Stepping Stone To HE, Many On A P/T Basis With Their Employer’s Financial Support

- Always Have A Back Up Plan Such As A 6th form Or College Place Just In Case You Are Unsuccessful
